Carry-On Packing List for International Travel

A good carry-on is not the bag with the most stuff. It is the bag that keeps your essentials accessible if checked luggage is delayed.

Documents and essentials

Electronics

Pack only the devices you are likely to use. A phone, charger and suitable travel adapter are often enough for many travelers. Keep cables together in a small pouch so airport security and hotel unpacking are easier.

Clothing

Choose versatile layers rather than separate outfits for every day. A lightweight top, comfortable bottoms, underwear, socks and one warm layer can form the core of a compact setup. Check the destination's expected climate before packing.

Toiletries

Use small containers where possible and follow the current liquid rules of the airports you will use. Put essential toiletries in an easy-to-reach pouch.

Comfort items

Useful choices can include earplugs, an eye mask, a refillable bottle where permitted, a small snack and something to help you sleep or relax during the journey.

What not to overpack

Extra shoes, duplicate electronics, too many “just in case” outfits and full-size toiletries are common sources of unnecessary weight. You can often buy ordinary consumables at your destination.
